Summary of To Kill a Mockingbird – Chapter 24

Aunt Alexandra plans to formally introduce Scout to her mission circle. She invites the circle to tea in August. Scout Finch helps Calpurnia pour tea. She wears a dress. Aunt Alexandra tells Scout to stay with the ladies. The group discusses an African tribe recently converted to Christianity, then gossips about the bad behavior of their black servants after Tom’s trial.

Atticus’s presence interrupts the circle’s gossip. They don’t expect him to get home before his usual time today. Scout knows something is up. He goes to the kitchen and calls Alexandra. In the kitchen, he informs Scout, Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie, and Calpurnia that Tom Robinson is already dead. Tom attempted to escape from prison and was shot seventeen times by prison guards. This is a doubly sad and unfair turn of events. Tom was innocent of rape and he should never have been jailed in the first place. Now, after trying to escape his wrongful imprisonment, he is killed. Atticus asks Calpurnia to come with him to Tom’s house and break the bad news to his family. The others join the ladies for more tea.

Calpurnia (Lime):

Calpurnia, or Cal for short, is Scout and Jem’s nanny and mother figure. She is the Finch family’s cook and takes care of the needs of the entire household. She is a bit strict and disciplinary, but caring and loving deep down. She goes to great lengths to get Scout to live the life of a good straight man.
