How to launch a website

The website will need to exist on a server somewhere, so you will need some kind of hosting package. Web hosting packages vary widely based on requirements. Godaddy offers a reasonably priced starter pack of around $ 60 a year. It really matters little where you host your site, if you have a preference in the hosting company, go for it.

You will then need to publish the site, this means assembling the main swf and whatever other files it calls, in your server space. The files are uploaded using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. You can download the software from providers like Ipswitch or Cute_FTP.

Also, many web hosting companies these days offer their own FTP client for you to use as part of your hosting package.

With a good internet connection, you should be able to load a Flash Movie type site very quickly where the file size is low. Larger files, such as video files, will take a little longer.

If you choose to call the main movie directly, that is, the index page is yoursite.swf, the site will expand and contract to fit the viewer’s screen resolution. Given the different screen types and calibrations in common use, this can often lead to unintended negative consequences for some of your site visitors.

To avoid these potential eventualities, it is strongly recommended that you restrict the size of your site so that it appears the same to all users, regardless of their display settings. The most common screen resolution is 1024 * 768 according to thecounter.com.

It is recommended that you address this by sizing the site to 1000 * 700 using an html index file that will serve to contain your main movie. You can set the background color with this index file to match your movie. The color should be selected so that the film blends perfectly with the background in larger screen resolutions.

Once you have completed these steps, your site will be live and you should check for errors before showing it to the world at large. You should also try common browsers: IE, Mozzilla, Safari.

If you bought your domain name along with the hosting, you should be good to go. If they come from different providers, you will need to modify the nameservers in your domain account to point to the correct IP address (something like 156.95.23.11) where your site resides on their server.
