Cubicles: Tips for Decorating Your Office

As an employer, how can I make cubicles more comfortable and enjoyable for my employees? I’m glad you asked. Many employers don’t care or don’t know that this is important. So congratulations on caring in the first place!

Now that we’re on the same page and everyone is in a good mood, let’s get the employees in a good mood, okay? How do we do that for workers who use cubicles? One way is to give them the feeling that their little cubicle is their space. Make them feel liberated, free to feel at home. You can remind them that their work areas need to be kept clean and clutter-free, but that doesn’t mean they can’t customize them.

That’s the keyword here: personalize. Let the cubicles decorate. If you are concerned that this might put customers off when they visit the building, you are completely wrong. Most customers should be delighted to note evidence that the company they do business with is striving to make employees happy at work. After all, happy workers mean productive and enjoyable customer service. And that’s the goal here naturally

It is also the goal to recognize that work is not everything: employees are human beings with feelings, families, needs, concerns and aspirations. If you can make your employees who occupy cubicles feel completely valued and important, the best of them will come out. If you make them feel threatened and marginalized, they may try to sound “good”, but behind the scenes they will turn their back on you and the goals and policies of the company. Failure to acknowledge that is nothing short of gross oversight.

So let them decorate their cubicles with pictures, posters, computer wallpapers (often misnamed “screen savers”), plus colored / designed items like staplers, mouse pads, pens, and more. Little things count!
